Portland-based lighting studio Cedar & Moss has a reputation for high-quality, handcrafted light fixtures that blend mid-century modern design with contemporary applications. Known for its minimalist forms, timeless sensibility, and reverence for craft, Cedar & Moss is a natural kindred spirit — not just in aesthetic, but in values. We’ve always admired their work, and it turned out the feeling was mutual.

As a Portland native, it means a lot to me working with local vendors. I have admired Pratt + Larson tile for as long as I can remember. I’ve used their tile in my own homes. So this collaboration truly felt like a hometown dream come true.”

Tile Dreams

While Cedar & Moss had developed other ceramic light designs over the years, this collaboration was their first opportunity to work with patterned surfaces, ram pressing, and more intricate glazing techniques.

Pratt + Larson is a kindred spirit.  They love what they do, are passionate makers, do not cut corners, and take good care of their team members. At Cedar & Moss, we share the same values and ethos.”

Michelle shared her vision — inspired by the monumental concrete fireplace at the Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs Resort. We then layered in additional inspiration from Pacific Northwest sculptors of the ’60s and ’70s, particularly the work of local wood carver Leroy Setziol.

Enriching Designs

Sconces

The result? Three sconces, each sculpted by hand and brought to life in our studio. Our own Belle Iskowitz and Anthony Asch each carved their own interpretation in clay, while a third design was pulled from our archives and reimagined for lighting.

We came up with nicknames for them. Anthony’s design became Asch, which took on an organic form with subtle botanical references. Belle’s became Izzy, which featured a rhythmic, linear texture that allows the glaze to pool and highlight its depth. And they pulled a design out of the archives from Michael Pratt. So we had three designs honoring the three artists, which was meaningful.”

The finished pieces — the Izzy, Asch, and Pratt sconces — showcase the hallmarks of our tile: sculptural form and complex glazes that shift with the light. When illuminated, each sconce casts soft shadows and highlights the hand-carved detail.

When the light hits that glaze pattern, how it pools and breaks on the ridges and the low spots… it just really shows off their craftsmanship. We were blown away how beautifully they turned out, and they’ve been very popular. In fact, we just took an order for 125 of them for a hotel project.”

Canopies

In addition to the sconces, we also developed three round ceramic backplate canopies, designed to pair with Cedar & Moss’s most popular lights.

Normally the metal arm of your light would connect to a canopy or backplate that’s also metal. These allow you to change the canopy from metal to ceramic, which is very unique. No one else that I know of in the lighting industry has that kind of upgrade.”

It’s a small but impactful touch — adding an element of tactile richness to any fixture. Available in a curated selection of Pratt + Larson glazes, the backplates make a statement on their own or work beautifully with corresponding P+L tile.

MORE INSPIRATION AHEAD

Collaborating with Michelle and the Cedar & Moss team was effortless from the start — a true meeting of the minds (and hands). With more ideas already percolating and a fresh batch of glazes in the works, we’re excited to continue creating together.
The collaboration was an absolute joy. Each of us brought a deep understanding of our craft, which made for a natural and rewarding process. At Cedar & Moss, we see collaborations as a way to bring together distinct skills and creative perspectives — resulting in unique projects that neither studio might pursue otherwise. At heart, we’re all just dedicated makers who love our crafts.”
